Democracy Day: Tinubu to Address National Assembly as FG Sets Stage for Mid-Term Scorecard

June 3, 2026

President Bola Tinubu will deliver a joint address to the National Assembly on June 12 as part of activities marking Nigeria’s 27th Democracy Day anniversary, in what is expected to serve as a major platform for the administration to present its governance record, defend ongoing reforms and outline its priorities for the country, Prime Business Africa reports.

The Federal Government announced the programme on Tuesday during the inauguration of the Inter-Ministerial Committee (IMC) responsible for organising the national celebration.

Speaking at the event in Abuja, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator George Akume, said the President’s address to lawmakers would be one of the key highlights of this year’s Democracy Day observance. President Tinubu is also expected to deliver a nationwide broadcast on the same day.

Beyond the ceremonial significance of the anniversary, the June 12 address is likely to attract heightened national attention as Nigerians assess the impact of the administration’s economic and governance reforms amid persistent cost-of-living pressures and other socio-economic challenges.

The annual commemoration comes at a critical moment for the Tinubu administration, which has repeatedly defended its policy choices as necessary steps toward long-term economic stability and national development. The Democracy Day platform is therefore expected to provide the President with an opportunity to articulate progress made by his government and reassure citizens on the direction of ongoing reforms.

Akume described Democracy Day as a solemn occasion to honour the sacrifices of Nigerians who fought for the restoration of democratic rule, paying tribute to the heroes of the June 12, 1993 struggle and the late Chief Moshood Kashimawo Olawale (MKO) Abiola.

He said the anniversary also offers an opportunity for the Federal Government to showcase achievements in strengthening democratic institutions and advancing national development.

“This celebration provides a moment to reflect on our democratic journey, honour those who made sacrifices for democracy and assess how far we have come as a nation,” he said.

According to the approved programme, activities marking the anniversary will begin with a World Press Conference on June 4, followed by Special Juma’at Prayers on June 5 and an Inter-denominational Church Service on June 7.

Other events include a Democracy Day Public Lecture on June 9, Youth and Women-Oriented Programmes on June 10, a Presidential Broadcast on June 12 and a Democracy Day Gala Night later that day.

With only days to the anniversary, Akume urged members of the organising committee to commence immediate preparations, stressing that this year’s activities would be “modest but purposeful” in line with the government’s commitment to fiscal discipline and prevailing national realities.

Nigeria observes Democracy Day annually on June 12 in honour of the country’s democratic evolution and the historic 1993 presidential election, widely regarded as one of the freest and fairest in the nation’s history.

For the Tinubu administration, however, this year’s observance is expected to be more than a symbolic celebration. It offers a nationally televised opportunity to account for its stewardship, reinforce public confidence in democratic governance and set the agenda for the next phase of its policy programme.
