Wide jubilation has erupted in the Vatican City, Rome as white smoke rose from the Sistine Chapel chimney, signaling that a new pope has been elected.
While the new pope is yet to be known, the white smoke, as is customary with the election of a new pope, means that the election has been successful.

The conclave for the election of the 267th pontiff began on Wednesday, 7 May. The 133 cardinal electors had done three voting sessions but could not get the two-thirds majority required.
