Cheers Erupt In Vatican As White Smoke Emerges, Signaling New Pope Elected

Wide jubilation has erupted in the Vatican City, Rome as white smoke rose from the Sistine Chapel chimney, signaling that a new pope has been elected.

While the new pope is yet to be known, the white smoke, as is customary with the election of a new pope, means that the election has been successful.

There are expectations that he will appear on the balcony overlooking St Peter’s Square shortly.

The conclave for the election of the 267th pontiff began on Wednesday, 7 May. The 133 cardinal electors had done three voting sessions but could not get the two-thirds majority required.
