Atiku Pledges to Support Whoever Emerges as ADC Candidate

2027: Atiku Dumps PDP

Former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar said he would support whoever emerges as the presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) for the 2027 election, as the party faces a standoff with the electoral commission.

In a recent media interview, Atiku, a presidential aspirant on the ADC platform, said all contenders would rally behind the eventual flagbearer.

“We will support and endorse whoever emerges as the flag bearer,” he said, adding that the number of aspirants in the party remains small compared to previous contests he has participated in.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) said on Wednesday it would cease further communication with the ADC leadership and would not monitor the party’s national convention scheduled for April 14, citing a court ruling.

The ADC has rejected the decision, accusing the commission of misinterpreting the judgment and insisting it will proceed with its convention and other activities.

Atiku alleged that “vested interests” were behind the party’s current challenges, arguing that its growing support base had made it a target.

He described the ADC as youth-focused, saying many of its aspirants for positions ranging from local councils to the National Assembly are young people, and reaffirmed the party’s commitment to inclusion of youths and women.

Asked whether he would support a younger presidential candidate, Atiku said he would.

He also expressed confidence that Nigerians are ready for political change, citing economic hardship and insecurity.

According to him, worsening insecurity, particularly in northern Nigeria, is linked to youth unemployment and poor access to education, which he said has not received adequate government attention.

Atiku further accused the government of tolerating corruption, alleging that public officials have failed to address the problem.
