Nigeria’s leading carrier, Air Peace, has formally launched direct commercial flight operations between Lagos and Barbados, marking a major milestone in efforts to strengthen air connectivity, tourism, trade and cultural relations between Africa and the Caribbean, Prime Business Africa reports.

The airline’s inaugural commercial flight departed Lagos on May 24, 2026, and arrived in Barbados with more than 284 passengers aboard a Boeing 777 aircraft, signaling what stakeholders described as growing demand for easier travel between both regions.

Following the launch, the Government of Barbados, in collaboration with African Export-Import Bank, hosted a high-level forum and media reception at the Indigo Hotel in Barbados to officially welcome the Nigerian carrier into the Caribbean market.

The event attracted senior government officials, diplomats, tourism executives, airline representatives and other stakeholders, reflecting institutional backing for stronger Africa-Caribbean integration through direct aviation links.

Among those present were Barbados’ Minister of Tourism and International Transport, Ian Gooding-Edghill; Minister of State in the Prime Minister’s Office with responsibility for Youth and Culture, Shane Archer; Barbados Ambassador to CARICOM, David Commissiong; Barbados High Commissioner to Nigeria, Ghana and Liberia, Juliet Sutherland-Bynoe; Acting Chief Operating Officer of Afreximbank, Okechukwu Ihejirika; Chairman of Barbados Tourism Marketing Inc., Peter Harris; and the organisation’s Chief Executive Officer, Andrea Franklin.

Speaking during the forum, Gooding-Edghill described the direct Lagos-Barbados route as “a landmark occasion for Barbados, for the Caribbean and for deepening relations between the region and the African continent.”

He said the route represented one of the strongest practical expressions of efforts by both regions to strengthen long-standing ties, adding that Barbados would serve as a gateway into the wider Caribbean.

“When Air Peace flies into Barbados, it does so carrying the weight of a relationship that both regions have been working toward,” the minister stated.

He also assured the airline of the Barbadian government’s support toward ensuring the sustainability and long-term success of the route through tourism promotion, trade engagement and diplomatic cooperation.

Air Peace Resumes Direct Flights from Lagos to Caribbean

Afreximbank’s Acting Chief Operating Officer, Ihejirika, reaffirmed the bank’s support for initiatives aimed at improving connectivity between Africa and the Caribbean, stressing that sustainable air transport links remain critical to trade expansion, regional integration and economic cooperation.

In his remarks, Air Peace Chief Commercial Officer, Nowel Ngala, described the launch as the culmination of years of collaboration focused on bridging Africa and the Caribbean through direct air transport.

“Today marks the end of the long road to making this airlift connection possible, and the beginning of a new journey that has now been created,” Ngala said.

According to him, the route would create new opportunities for tourism, commerce and cultural exchange while improving travel convenience for passengers across both regions.

Ngala also commended Air Peace Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Allen Onyema, for driving the airline’s international expansion strategy aimed at deepening African connectivity beyond the continent.

Industry stakeholders said the service would help address long-standing travel difficulties faced by passengers commuting between Africa and the Caribbean, particularly multiple stopovers, extended transit periods and restrictive visa processes associated with connecting flights through Europe and North America.

The airline confirmed that the Lagos-Barbados route would operate twice monthly, with flights scheduled for the last two Mondays of every month.

The inaugural return commercial flight from Barbados to Lagos was scheduled for May 25, as both African and Caribbean stakeholders renewed commitments to deeper cooperation across aviation, tourism, trade and cultural exchange.
