Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has been forced to change the venue for the National May Day Celebration in Abuja, after the government suddenly withdrew the permit to use the Eagle Square just three days before the event.
The decision has been met with suspicion and concern among the members of the NLC, who have been using the venue for decades.

In a letter addressed to all affiliates, the General Secretary of NLC, Comrade Emmanuel Ugboaja, expressed his disappointment and called on all members to be prepared for what might be coming in the near future.
The NLC has now decided to shift the venue for the celebration to the streets of Abuja.
According to the letter, they will kick off the rally from the National Headquarters of the NLC at 8:00 AM.
All affiliates are to assemble on the grounds of the Paschal Bafyau Labour House on Monday the 1st of May from where they will proceed on the rally around Abuja.
According to Ugboaja, this will be an opportunity to deepen their reconnection with the people who are their true partners in the struggle for a free society.
The NLC is the largest trade union in Nigeria, representing workers from various sectors of the economy. Its motto, “Labour Creates Wealth,” reflects its commitment to ensuring that workers are treated fairly and that their contributions to the economy are recognized. The NLC has been at the forefront of the struggle for workers’ rights in Nigeria, and its members have played a key role in shaping the country’s labour laws and policies.
