China Box Office: Jackie Chan’s ‘Ride On’ Wins Big

Jackie Chan, the legendary Hong Kong action star, has once again proven his box-office prowess with the success of his latest film, ‘Ride On’.

The movie, directed by Larry Yang and produced by Alibaba Pictures, centers around Chan’s character, a washed-up stuntman who is fighting to keep ownership of his beloved stunt horse while also battling debt collectors.

Despite facing stiff competition from the Japanese hit anime ‘Suzume’ and Universal Pictures ‘The Super Mario Bros. Movie, ‘Ride On’ emerged victorious, earning $11.7 million in its opening weekend in China.

‘Suzume’, which had been performing strongly in China, came in second with $8 million, while ‘The Super Mario Bros. Movie’ lagged behind with a disappointing $6.3 million.

Despite earning high social scores of 9.4 on Maoyan and 9.5 on Taopiaopiao, the movie failed to capture the Chinese market, where Hollywood films have been struggling this year.

In North America, however,  ‘The Super Mario Bros. Movie exceeded expectations, earning $204.6 million over the long Easter holiday weekend. This success is not surprising, as Hollywood tentpoles were once able to earn as much or more in China as they did in the US prior to the pandemic.

However, the pandemic has had a significant impact on the Chinese box office, and Hollywood films have not been performing as well in the country as they once did.

On the other hand, Japanese anime film‘ Suzume’  continues to perform exceptionally well in China, earning $8 million during its third weekend and reaching a total of $102.6 million. The film is expected to earn over $110 million, setting a new all-time high for Japanese animation in China.

Jackie Chan’s ‘Ride On’  is predicted to continue its success in China and earn more than $30 million throughout its theatrical run. With a storied career spanning over 60 years in the movie business, Chan’s continued success serves as a testament to his enduring appeal as an action star and his ability to draw audiences in.
