Parton’s death came days after she publicly discussed ongoing health problems. She had told PEOPLE that she was dealing with health issues and had been taking steps to address them. Earlier in the year, she cancelled a planned Las Vegas residency and acknowledged that she had been experiencing health difficulties.

Born on Jan. 19, 1946, in rural Tennessee, Parton grew up in a large family in the Great Smoky Mountains. She began performing as a child before moving to Nashville, where she established herself as a songwriter and recording artist.

She went on to become one of the most successful figures in country music, selling more than 100 million records worldwide and earning numerous honours, including 11 Grammy Awards and induction into the Country Music Hall of Fame.

Her songwriting catalogue included some of the most enduring songs in popular music, including “Jolene,” “Coat of Many Colors,” “9 to 5” and “I Will Always Love You.”

Beyond entertainment, Parton developed a significant business and philanthropic legacy. She was closely associated with Dollywood, the Tennessee theme park that became a major tourist attraction, and founded Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library, a literacy programme that provides books to children.

Parton’s death marks the end of one of the longest and most influential careers in modern country music, leaving behind a vast catalogue of songs, films, business ventures and charitable initiatives that will continue to shape her legacy.
