Media mogul and CNN founder Ted Turner, the outspoken entrepreneur credited with transforming global television news through the creation of the first 24-hour news network, has died at the age of 87, CNN reported on Wednesday, citing a statement from Turner Enterprises.
The report said no cause of death was provided, according to Reuters.
Turner’s death marks the end of a career that reshaped modern broadcasting and helped usher in the continuous news cycle that now dominates global media.

Born Robert Edward Turner III on November 19, 1938, in Cincinnati, Ohio, Turner rose from a regional advertising business to become one of the most influential figures in American media. After taking over his family’s billboard company at a young age, he expanded aggressively into broadcasting with the purchase of a struggling Atlanta television station in 1970.
That acquisition became the foundation for a rapidly expanding media empire, as Turner pioneered the use of satellite technology to distribute television content nationwide. The strategy turned his station into a “superstation” and laid the groundwork for his broader cable television ambitions.
In 1980, Turner launched CNN in Atlanta, a network that broke from traditional broadcast norms by offering round-the-clock news coverage. At the time, the concept was widely dismissed within the industry, but CNN quickly established itself as a global force, delivering real-time reporting on wars, political crises, and major world events.
Over the following decades, Turner built a sprawling media portfolio that included TBS, TNT, and MGM/UA, before merging his company with Time Warner in 1996 in a landmark deal that created one of the largest entertainment conglomerates in the world. He later stepped away from executive control amid corporate restructuring and the AOL-Time Warner merger era.

Beyond media, Turner became known for his environmental advocacy and large-scale philanthropy. In 1997, he pledged $1 billion to support United Nations causes, completing the donation two decades later. He also funded conservation efforts and invested heavily in land preservation, amassing one of the largest private landholdings in the United States.
Turner’s public persona was as distinctive as his business record marked by blunt commentary, competitive instincts, and a flair for controversy that earned him nicknames such as the “Mouth of the South” and “Captain Outrageous.” His ventures extended into sports ownership, including the Atlanta Braves and Atlanta Hawks, as well as competitive sailing, where he won the America’s Cup.
In 2018, Turner revealed he had been diagnosed with Lewy body dementia, a degenerative neurological condition.
He was married three times, including to actress Jane Fonda, and had five children.
