Sonko Moves to Tighten Grip on Senegal Parliament After PM Ouster

May 25, 2026

A fresh political showdown is unfolding in Senegal as former Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko moves to take control of the country’s National Assembly following his removal from government by President Bassirou Diomaye Faye, Prime Business Africa reports.

Lawmakers have been summoned for a full parliamentary session on Tuesday amid plans to reinstate Sonko as a member of parliament and elect a new Speaker of the National Assembly, a move widely interpreted as a major consolidation of political power by the ruling PASTEF coalition.

Senegal National Assembly President El Malick Ndiaye Resigns

The development follows the resignation on Sunday of Assembly President El Malick Ndiaye, a close ally of Sonko, intensifying speculation that the former prime minister is preparing to assume leadership of the legislature.

The parliamentary manoeuvre comes barely days after President Faye removed Sonko as prime minister, in what analysts describe as the clearest sign yet of deepening divisions within Senegal’s ruling establishment.

Sonko, the influential leader of the PASTEF party, retains significant control within parliament where the party commands a dominant majority. His anticipated return to the legislature is expected to further complicate relations with President Faye, whose administration now faces the challenge of appointing a new prime minister capable of securing parliamentary approval.

Senegal’s Ruling Alliance Crumbles as President Faye Fires PM Sonko, Dissolves Government

Under Senegalese law, any new prime minister nominated by the president must obtain the backing of the National Assembly within three months.

With the legislature now potentially under Sonko’s direct influence, political observers say the balance of power may increasingly tilt away from the presidency.

President Faye is also constitutionally barred from dissolving parliament until November, limiting his immediate options as tensions within the governing camp continue to escalate.

The latest developments come amid reports that recent amendments to Senegal’s electoral code have restored Sonko’s eligibility to contest future presidential elections, potentially positioning him for a renewed bid for the country’s highest office.

The unfolding rivalry between the two leaders is being closely watched across West Africa, with concerns mounting over the potential impact of the political standoff on governance and stability in one of the region’s most influential democracies.
