The Government of Ghana has rescued and repatriated 28 Ghanaian nationals from Côte d’Ivoire after they reportedly fell victim to a sophisticated human trafficking network that promised to transport them to Europe.
In a statement issued on Sunday, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ghana, Sam Ablakwa said the victims, mostly young people, were rescued through a joint operation involving Ghanaian embassy officials in Abidjan and security operatives in Côte d’Ivoire.
According to the ministry, the victims arrived safely in Ghana on May 10, 2026, and are currently assisting authorities with ongoing investigations aimed at dismantling the trafficking syndicate.

The ministry disclosed that the traffickers allegedly extorted large sums of money from the victims under the false promise of securing travel and employment opportunities in Europe.
Authorities commended Ivorian officials for their cooperation and intelligence-sharing, which contributed to the successful operation.
The Ghanaian government also reiterated its commitment to protecting citizens abroad, stressing that the administration of President John Dramani Mahama would continue efforts to rescue Ghanaians in distress and prosecute those behind human trafficking operations.
“The welfare of all Ghanaians remains our utmost priority,” the ministry stated.
The government further warned citizens, particularly young people, to remain vigilant and avoid falling prey to fraudulent travel and recruitment schemes operated by unlicensed agents.
It advised the public to verify overseas job and travel offers with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ministry of Labour, Jobs and Employment Relations, and Ghana’s diplomatic missions before making any commitments.
