A civil society organisation, the Foundation for Digital Justice, has formally requested the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to disclose details of its forensic investigation into an allegedly fabricated X (formerly Twitter) account linked to Joash Amupitan, Prime Business Africa reports.
In a letter dated April 21, 2026, and addressed to the INEC Chairman, the group invoked the provisions of the Freedom of Information Act 2011, seeking full transparency regarding the Commission’s reported probe.
The organisation requested a certified true copy of the forensic report detailing the investigation into the alleged fake social media account, identified as @joashamupitan. It also demanded the identity and professional credentials of the independent cybersecurity expert or firm engaged by INEC to conduct the analysis.

Further, the group asked for disclosure of the terms of engagement between INEC and the forensic investigator, including any service agreements outlining the scope of work and conditions guiding the audit.
The request extends to financial details, with the organisation seeking a breakdown of payments made by the Commission for the forensic exercise. It also called for supporting documents such as procurement records and internal certifications related to the completion of the assignment.

Signed by its Legal Manager, Moses Alabi, the Foundation emphasised that the request falls within the statutory seven-day response period stipulated under the FOI Act.
It warned that failure by INEC to comply within the timeframe could prompt legal action in the public interest, while expressing hope that the Commission would respond promptly to avoid escalation.
INEC has yet to publicly respond to the request as of the time of filing this report.
