Protests Erupt in South Africa Over Installation of ‘Igbo King’

March 31, 2026

Protests have broken out in South Africa’s Eastern Cape province following the installation of a Nigerian community leader, with reports of violence targeting property owned by foreign nationals.

Local media reported that unrest in the East London area escalated this week, with protesters burning vehicles and buildings amid anger over the installation of Solomon Ogbonna Eziko as “Igwe Ndigbo,” a traditional title used by the Igbo people of southeastern Nigeria.
The installation, organised by members of the Nigerian community on March 24, has drawn criticism from authorities in South Africa’s Eastern Cape, who view it as disrespectful to local traditions and governance structures.
Eziko, an Igbo national, was given the title “Igwe Ndigbo Na East London,” a role described by organisers as symbolic leadership within the diaspora community.
The controversy has heightened tensions in parts of the province, where past incidents of violence against foreign nationals have been reported.
The Nigerian Citizens Association South Africa said the title was not intended to undermine South Africa’s sovereignty or traditional institutions. In a statement, the group emphasised that the role is cultural and aimed at promoting unity and preserving Igbo identity among Nigerians living abroad.
“It does not possess, nor does it seek to exercise, any political or governmental authority within South Africa,” the association said, adding that no kingdom was created.
