Defection to APC Already Paying Off – Delta Governor

March 28, 2026

Delta State Governor, Sheriff Oborevwori says his decision to defect to the All Progressives Congress is already benefiting his oil-rich state, citing improved access to federal resources and governance outcomes.

In a press release on the sidelines of the party’s convention in Abuja, Oborevwori said his April 2025 move to join the ruling party was aimed at aligning Delta with the federal government led by Bola Tinubu.

“That bold decision we took is manifesting today,” he said Friday at Eagle Square, where the convention was held. “We wanted to connect with the centre, and we have connected.”

Oborevwori noted that increased allocations to states have improved their ability to pay salaries and fund projects, adding that federal economic policies were beginning to yield results despite ongoing hardship.

“It’s a gradual process,” he said. “We know the sufferings of Nigerians, but things are improving.”

He also pointed to what he described as growing support for the APC among state governors, saying the party now controls a majority of states — an unprecedented development since Nigeria’s return to democracy in 1999.

The governor credited improved security in Delta for a rise in oil production, noting that there have been no recent attacks on oil facilities.

“Delta State remains number one in oil production,” he said.
