Tinubu Renames University of Maiduguri After Buhari

July 17, 2025

President Tinubu has officially renamed the University of Maiduguri in Borno State to Muhammadu Buhari University, in honour of Nigeria’s immediate past president, the late Muhammadu Buhari.

The announcement was made during a special session of the Federal Executive Council (FEC) held on Wednesday in Abuja, where the council paid tribute to the former president, who recently passed away.

While speaking at the session, Tinubu said the renaming was a gesture to immortalize Buhari’s enduring contributions to national development, particularly in the North-east region. He commended the former president’s legacy in the areas of security, education, and public service.

“This is not just about renaming an institution,” Tinubu said. “It is about honouring a legacy of discipline, patriotism, and steadfast service. The University of Maiduguri stands as a symbol of resilience in the North-East, just as President Buhari stood as a symbol of commitment to Nigeria’s unity and progress.”

With the announcement, the university will now be known as Muhammadu Buhari University, Maiduguri, pending full administrative and legislative formalisation.

According to presidency sources, the Ministry of Education will issue implementation guidelines, while the National Universities Commission (NUC) is expected to oversee the formal transition, including official gazetting, curriculum documentation, and university statutes.

The name change is expected to take effect in stages, beginning with updates to official documentation, signage, branding, and communication from the university.

This marks the latest in a string of institutional renamings by the Tinubu administration. In June, the Federal Government approved the renaming of the University of Abuja as Yakubu Gowon University, and the Federal University of Education, Kano as Yusuf Maitama Sule Federal University of Education.

Established in 1975, the University of Maiduguri has played a critical role in advancing higher education in Nigeria’s North-East. It is one of the few universities in the region that remained open and active during the height of the Boko Haram insurgency.

Tributes have continued to pour in from academic stakeholders and political leaders across the country, many of whom welcomed the decision as a fitting tribute to the late Buhari’s life and legacy.
