Keyamo Orders Immediate Repair Of  Enugu Airport Damaged Taxiway

Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, has ordered the immediate commencement of the repair of the damaged portion of the Link B taxiway at the Akanu Ibiam International Airport in Enugu State.

Keyamo gave the directive after inspecting the damaged section of the taxiway on Monday.

The minister visited the airport on Monday for the launch of Enugu Air, an airline floated by the state government.

In a post on his X handle, Keyamo explained that the damaged portion of the Link B taxiway at the airport was part of the portion reconstructed in 2019 when the airport was shut for one year.

He expressed that since the damaged portion is a taxiway, it has not disrupted flight operations.

“Earlier today, I arrived at the Akanu Ibiam International Airport in Enugu, where I inspected the damaged portion of the Link B taxiway at the airport, which is part of the portion reconstructed in 2019 when the airport was shut for one year,” Keyamo stated.

“I immediately directed the engagement of competent consultants in order to find a lasting solution to the problem.

Luckily, since it is a taxiway, it has not disrupted flight operations.”

Prime Business Africa had reported that the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) shut down flight operations to and from the airport in April to carry out comprehensive rehabilitation of the runway. It had at the point got worse that airlines expressed concerns about safety while using the runway.  FAAN said there was a sudden and significant rupture in the asphalt surface at a critical section of the runway.

The airport which was closed on 18 April, reopened on 28th April 2025 for flight operations after FAAN announced completion of the emergency runway repairs.

The minister also inspected the refurbished control tower at the Enugu airport, where brand new Air Traffic Control (ATC console and communications equipment were installed. “This is one of such equipment that will be installed in 12 ATC Airports in the country,” Keyamo stated.
