Prime Business Africa had reported on Friday, 18 April, that FAAN announced a temporary shutdown of operations in the airport over a sudden and significant rupture of critical sections of the runway.

FAAN said the shutdown was to enable it to conduct a comprehensive rehabilitation of the runway, which some airlines had lamented, posed a threat to safety, especially during the landing of aircraft.

The repair work was scheduled to commence on Tuesday, 22 April and end on Tuesday, 6 May 2025.

However, according to a statement released on Saturday by FAAN Director of Public Affairs & Consumer Protection, Mrs Obiageli Orah, the rehabilitation on the Akanu Ibiam International Airport runway has been completed and will be reopened on Monday, 28 April for flight operations.

This is about one week earlier than the scheduled completion date.

“FAAN appreciates all airport users and stakeholders for their understanding and cooperation during this time. The Authority sincerely apologises for the inconvenience but assures the public that all actions were taken in the interest of safety,” Mrs Orah stated.
