The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Federal Operations Unit (FOU) Zone ‘A’, has announced the seizure of illegal goods worth over ₦1.28 billion within two weeks and vowed to intensify actions against smugglers and economic saboteurs.
Comptroller of the Unit, Mohammed Shuaibu, who made this known recently, said the latest operations demonstrated the unit’s renewed dedication to intelligence-led enforcement, adding that it would continue to provide a more effective defence against smugglers.
Join our WhatsApp Channel“As criminals get more desperate and daring, we at the Federal Operations Unit, Zone ‘A’ will ensure the sustainability of a more formidable defense against any antics devised by these non-state actors,” Comptroller Shuaibu stated.
According to him, the items seized include: 1,665 kg of Cannabis Sativa (Indian hemp), 1,263 used tyres, bulletproof vests, and pharmaceutical products, including Tramadol, 2,051 bags of foreign parboiled rice, 11 used vehicles, Seven Mitsubishi Canters, five Toyota Hiace buses, and three mini shuttle buses, all cut up and concealed to evade duties, among others.
The Comptroller assured that the Nigeria Customs Service will continue to create and implement long-term plans that will boost the economy, raise government revenue, and promote lawful trade.
He also revealed that seven suspects were arrested in connection with these seizures.
Apart from the seizures, the unit was able to recover ₦48.34 million in lost revenue by issuing demand notices on goods that were improperly declared.
As part of efforts to boost the morale of officers, Shuaibu said monthly parades and weekly sporting activities have been revived. “As of today, we have resuscitated the monthly parades and weekly sporting activities.”
While commending the officers for their unwavering dedication, gallantry, and integrity which led to the achievements, Shuaibu also expressed appreciation to stakeholders and partners for their cooperation.
