Socialite, Emeka Okonkwo, popularly known as E-Money, has shared a video on social media to confirm his release by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

E-Money was released on Tuesday evening after hours of interrogation by EFCC officials over alleged abuse of the Nigerian currency and defacing of foreign notes.

Prime Business Africa gathered that the socialite was arrested on Monday night at his residence in Lagos and subsequently moved to Abuja, where he was detained in the EFCC’s custody.

He was accused of naira abuse and defacing foreign currency, particularly for allegedly spraying US dollars in public, an act that contravenes the Foreign Exchange Act.

The video posted on his social media handle had the lyrics of a Christian song: “Thank you for saving me, thank you, my Lord,” apparently expressing his gratitude to God for his freedom.

He also gave the video a caption: “No tension, everywhere good. I see all your love and support. God bless you all.”

While reacting to the incident, his close associate, Pascal Okechukwu, popularly known as Cubana Chief Priest, congratulated him on his release. “My brother don fall out. To God be the glory,” Cubana Chief Priest wrote on his Instagram page.

E-Money has been added to the list of celebrities who are being investigated by the EFCC for suspected currency abuse. Terry Apala, a singer, was remanded by the commission at the Ikoyi Correctional Center a few days back due to similar accusations.

Nigerian crossdresser, Idris Okuneye, a.k.a Bobrisky, was sentenced to six months imprisonment in 2024 over mutilation of the Naira notes.
