In a defining moment for Ghana’s democracy, Vice President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) has conceded defeat in the December 7 presidential election, paving the way for former President John Dramani Mahama’s return to power.

The official results from Ghana’s Electoral Commission are still pending, but early figures and internal collations of the NPP suggest a decisive win for Mahama and the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

Dr. Bawumia, the ruling NPP flagbearer, announced his concession on Sunday morning, emphasizing peace and stability as priorities. He said he placed a call to Mahama to congratulate him for his victory.

“The data from our own internal collation of the election results indicate that former President John Dramani Mahama has won the presidential election decisively,” he stated.

Dr. Bawumia highlighted the NDC’s sweeping success in both the presidential and parliamentary races, signaling a shift in Ghana’s political landscape. “The NDC has also won the parliamentary election. Even though we await final collation of a number of seats, I believe ultimately these will not change the outcome,” he said.

The vice president’s concession not only mark the end of the NPP 8-year rule but signaled his party’s commitment to peaceful democratic process. “I am making this concession speech before the official announcement by the Electoral Commission to avoid further tension and preserve the peace of our country,” Bawumia explained, adding that Ghana’s stability is vital for both its citizens and its standing on the global stage.

Bawumia assured the public of the NPP’s commitment to a smooth handover of power. “As committed democrats, we pledge to ensure that we have a very smooth transition so that the business of government will continue seamlessly. The NPP will offer the needed support to the new government in a very responsible way,” he stated.

He expressed gratitude to Ghanaians for their participation in the electoral process and urged all citizens to rally behind the incoming administration for the nation’s progress.

News of Mahama’s projected victory has sparked jubilation among NDC supporters across Ghana. Streets in party strongholds erupted with celebrations as supporters danced, sang, and waved NDC flags, hailing the return of their leader.

For Mahama, this victory is a vindication of his political resilience, marking a comeback after his defeat in 2016 and another unsuccessful bid in 2020. Supporters believe his return signals renewed hope for economic and social reforms.

While the Electoral Commission continues to finalize the results, the concession by Dr. Bawumia is seen as a step towards preserving Ghana’s legacy of peaceful elections and political transitions. All eyes now turn to the Electoral Commission for the official confirmation of the country’s next leader.
