Human rights activist and former Kaduna Central Senator, Shehu Sani, has called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to release all #EndSARS protesters who are still in detention in commemoration of Nigeria’s Democracy Day on June 12.
Sani made the call in a post on his X handle, (formerly Twitter ) on Monday.
“In the spirit of the June 12 struggle which we fought 30 years ago, I call on the President to release all persons still held in the Nigerian Prisons because of the EndSars protest,” the former lawmaker stated.
Join our WhatsApp ChannelHe further explained that the action would be in line with the spirit of June 12, a day celebrated for its significance in Nigeria’s democratic history.
Thousands of young Nigerians had in October 2020, protested against police brutality after a video went viral of a man allegedly killed by the now-disbanded Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS), sparking what became known as the #EndSars demonstrations. The protest led to attacks on police stations, and officers. On 20 October 2020, many youths gathered at Lekki Toll gate in Lagos to stage an all-night protest that later turned tragic as some were shot to death, injured and others arrested and detained.
While some of the protesters were released, others are still believed to be held in various detention facilities.
Shehu Sani’s call for the release of the detained protesters indicates that the fight for justice and human rights in Nigeria is still ongoing. He therefore encouraged the current government to respect the efforts of those who worked hard for democracy and fair treatment under the law.
