Who Is Tunde Onakoya?

Nigerian superstar, Davido, graced New York’s Times Square to support Nigerian chess master, Tunde Onakoya, as he vies for a Guinness World Record in the longest chess marathon. Videos circulating on social media captured moments of Davido and Onakoya sharing hugs and dancing in a show of solidarity.

Joining the chorus of support were notable figures like Nigerian singer Adekunle Gold, Nigeria’s Consul-General in New York City, Ambassador Peter Egopija, and activist Omoyele Sowore, among others.

Onakoya, keeping his followers updated via his X account, shared, “We’ve hit game 100! 87 matches against my main rival, #CoachShawnMar, and 13 with other challengers. We’re 31 hours deep, with 27 to go. We’ve officially crossed the halfway mark, and the finish line is in sight. Keep the streams and donations coming!”

This event kicked off at 10 am on April 17 and is set to conclude at 8 pm on April 19. Onakoya’s goal? To engage in an intense chess marathon, aiming to play for an impressive 58 hours without suffering a single defeat.

The existing Guinness World Record, achieved by Norway’s Hallvard Haug Flatebø and Sjur Ferkingstad in 2018, stands at 56 hours, 9 minutes, and 37 seconds.
