'A Tribe Called Judah' Ends Cinema Run With ₦1.4 Billion

Funke Akindele’s masterpiece, ‘A Tribe Called Judah’, ends it’s run in Nigerian cinema after a successful 11-week run. Released on December 15, 2023, the comedy film soared to unparalleled heights, breaking box office records and amassing ₦1.4 billion in total gross earnings.

‘A Tribe Called Judah’ became the first Nollywood movie to cross the ₦1 billion milestone within the first weeks of January 2024.

Its phenomenal success was evident from the outset, raking in an astounding ₦113 million during its inaugural weekend, setting a new standard for Nigerian cinema.

The storyline of the film, revolving around the plight of five brothers resorting to a life of crime to save their ailing mother, struck a chord with audiences, propelling it to unprecedented heights of popularity.

As the curtains closed on its theatrical run, data from the Cinema Exhibitors Association of Nigeria (CEAN) revealed that ‘A Tribe Called Judah’ garnered a final weekend gross of ₦14,745, screened across just two locations. Throughout its tenure, the film accumulated a remarkable 374,552 ticket admissions, cementing its status as a cultural phenomenon.

Beyond Nigerian borders, the film captivated audiences in Ghana, the United Kingdom, and various regions across Benin, Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Congo, Gabon, Guinea, Rwanda, Senegal, and Togo.

Funke Akindele’s directorial prowess and the stellar performances of the cast have etched ‘A Tribe Called Judah’ into the annals of Nollywood history. With this monumental achievement, Akindele now claims the top three positions for the highest-grossing Nollywood films, with ‘Battle on Buka Street’ and ‘Omo Ghetto: The Saga’ following closely behind.
