Nigeria’s FCT Minister Nyesom Wike has upbraided the European Union (EU) for its assessment of the 2023 presidential election in Nigeria.

During a meeting with the EU Ambassador to Nigeria, Samuela Isopi, Wike stated that the report failed to accurately portray the election’s reality and created a misleading impression, particularly in Rivers State.

“I didn’t agree with the European Union over the last report on the election in Nigeria. They are to observe, that Nigerian laws can’t be the same as EU laws because they have different environments.

“Our concern should be how to make the economy grow better; we have to cooperate and agree on specific areas of development in the Federal Capital Territory and the entire country.

“Foreign partners should be concerned with strategic development irrespective of the areas,” the minister said.

Wike emphasized the uniqueness of Nigerian laws compared to EU laws due to different environments, emphasizing the need for cooperation on strategic development.

He also refuted the EU’s portrayal of events in Rivers State, asserting that the report overgeneralized specific incidents and questioned the EU’s presence at polling units.

In response, EU Ambassador Isopi clarified that the report was compiled by independent observers and assured the minister of the EU’s commitment to development in the territory and beyond.
