Trump Says CNN, MS NOW and Politico Barred from White House

September 19, 2026

U.S. President Donald Trump said on Friday that CNN, MS NOW and Politico would be barred from the White House, accusing the news organisations of publishing what he called false reports about his administration.

Trump announced the move on his Truth Social platform, saying it was effective immediately and accusing the outlets of publishing “fiction and lies”. He later told reporters at the White House that the decision reflected their coverage of his administration and suggested other news organisations could face similar restrictions.

Trump named The New York Times and The Washington Post as possible additional targets but did not announce bans against either organisation.

The scope and implementation of the restrictions were not immediately clear. Reporters from the three organisations remained on White House grounds on Friday after Trump’s announcement. Reuters reported that the White House was informing the outlets they would be barred from the grounds from Saturday.

CNN said it stood behind its White House team and its reporting, while Politico said it would continue covering the administration and defend its First Amendment rights. MS NOW did not immediately comment.

The legal implications could depend on the scope of the restrictions. Courts have given presidents considerable discretion over access to limited events and spaces, but broader restrictions on established White House press facilities or credentials can raise First Amendment and due-process questions.

In Sherrill v. Knight, a 1977 federal appeals court ruling, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit held that once the White House establishes press facilities for bona fide journalists, access cannot be denied arbitrarily or without compelling reasons and procedural safeguards. The ruling did not hold that the White House must provide press access in the first place.

The Trump administration is already involved in separate litigation over restrictions imposed on The Associated Press.

The move is likely to intensify the administration’s broader dispute with U.S. news organisations over access and coverage.

The three outlets have rejected Trump’s allegations, while press-freedom groups and legal experts have questioned whether restricting access in response to critical reporting would comply with constitutional protections.
