President Tinubu has reaffirmed that the longstanding relationship between Nigeria and the United Kingdom will continue to deepen, underscoring shared history, democratic values, and strategic cooperation between both nations.

Speaking at a state banquet hosted in his honour by King Charles III at Windsor Castle on Wednesday, Tinubu described the occasion as historic, noting that he is the first Nigerian leader to address such a gathering at the centuries-old royal residence.

Addressing an audience that included Queen Camilla and Prince William, the president emphasised that relations between both countries extend beyond shared history to a mutual commitment to progress, respect, and global cooperation.

Tinubu highlighted the United Kingdom’s influence on democratic governance worldwide, referencing the Magna Carta as a cornerstone in the evolution of the rule of law and parliamentary democracy.

He also acknowledged the contributions of Thomas Hobbes, John Locke, and Edmund Burke, noting that their ideas continue to shape democratic thought globally. He added that Nigeria’s legal and political systems still reflect elements of British influence, particularly in the adoption of English common law and parliamentary traditions.

Highlighting people-to-people ties, the president described Nigerians in the UK as one of the most dynamic diaspora communities, contributing significantly across sectors, particularly in healthcare through the National Health Service. He also cited prominent figures of Nigerian heritage, including Maro Itoje, Bukayo Saka, Eberechi Eze, and Anthony Joshua, as examples of the strong human connection between both countries.

On regional security, Tinubu stressed Nigeria’s role in addressing terrorism in West Africa, particularly in the Sahel, noting that collaboration with the UK remains vital. He also disclosed plans to meet with UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer to further strengthen bilateral cooperation in security and other areas.

Reflecting on Nigeria’s democratic journey, Tinubu expressed gratitude to the United Kingdom for offering refuge to pro-democracy activists during the military era. He recalled receiving protection from the Metropolitan Police, describing the support as a lasting symbol of solidarity.

Reaffirming confidence in Nigeria’s future, the president said the country is driven by a youthful population, an entrepreneurial spirit, and a collective determination to realise its full potential. “I am confident that the friendship between Nigeria and the United Kingdom will continue to grow,” he said.

He concluded his address with a toast to both nations, expressing optimism for a stronger partnership anchored on shared values and a common destiny.
