“Today we’re thrilled to announce the expansion of text posts on TikTok, a new format for creating text-based content that broadens options for creators to share their ideas and express their creativity,” the tech platform announced in a statement on Monday.

With this innovation, TikTok has become the latest social media platform to compete with Twitter in making text-based content. The new feature allows users to make a post of up to 1000 words and also add coloured backgrounds and stickers.

It said: “At TikTok, we’re always looking to empower our creators and community with innovative tools that inspire self-expression.

“With text posts, we’re expanding the boundaries of content creation for everyone on TikTok, giving the written creativity we’ve seen in comments, captions, and videos a dedicated space to shine.”

“Creators have been able to make content on TikTok across a variety of formats — from LIVE videos to photos, Duets to Stitch. Text is the latest addition to options for content creation, allowing creators to share their stories, poems, recipes, and other written content on TikTok – giving creators another way to express themselves and making it even easier to create,” the video-sharing platform said.

TikTok, which is owned by a Chinese tech company, ByteDance, came into existence in September 2016, but launched in the international market a year later in 2017.

Available in about 40 languages, the video hosting service surpassed 2 billion mobile downloads worldwide in October 2020. It has continued to maintain a steady growth in active users in recent years, despite facing challenges of usage restrictions in some Western countries over concerns on privacy, security, and content moderation.
