Tems, Burna Boy Feature On Obama's 2023 Favorite Music List

Former U.S. President Barack Obama, continuing his tradition of sharing an annual compilation of his favorite music, recently unveiled his top picks for 2023, and Nigerian superstars dominated the list alongside international artists. The inclusion of Davido, Asake, Burna Boy, and Tems underscores the global impact of Afrobeats.

Tems, the international Afrobeats sensation, secured her spot with the soulful single ‘Me & U,’ one of her standout releases in 2023.

Meanwhile, Burna Boy’s collaboration with 21 Savage on ‘Sitting On Top Of The World’ earned its place on the list and garnered a nomination for Best Melodic Rap Performance at the 2024 Grammy Awards. This accomplishment makes Burna Boy the first Nigerian lead artist to receive a Grammy nod beyond the global categories.

Davido’s chart-topping hit ‘Unavailable,’ featuring Musa Keys, and Asake’s ‘Amapiano’ featuring Olamide also captured Obama’s musical appreciation. Beyond being part of the former president’s favorite songs of 2023, both tracks received 2024 Grammy nominations for Best African Song Performance, further highlighting the global recognition of Nigerian music.

Additionally, Ayra Starr’s ‘Rush,’ which found a place on Obama’s 2022 year-end list, continued its success by earning a nomination in the newly created category of Best African Song Performance at the 2024 Grammy Awards.
