Suspected bandits carried out a coordinated night attack on several communities in Kebbi State, destroying homes and leaving an undisclosed number of casualties, residents and officials said.
The assault occurred late Sunday when armed attackers stormed villages including Gebe, Kawara and Kalkami in Shanga Local Government Area, taking advantage of the area’s wetland terrain to carry out the operation.
Eyewitnesses and local sources said the assailants set multiple houses on fire, forcing residents to flee to safety.
Join our WhatsApp ChannelSecurity sources said the attackers were believed to have emerged from hideouts in Wawa Forest, an area long associated with bandit activity near the affected communities.

Confirming the incident on Monday, the Kebbi State Police Command described the attack as coordinated.
Police spokesperson Bashir Usman said security personnel had been deployed to restore calm.
“Security forces, including police tactical units, the military, marine police and local vigilantes, have been deployed to the area to restore order and protect lives,” Usman said.
“The command expresses its deepest condolences to the families affected and stands firmly with the communities during this difficult time. Operations are ongoing to track down the perpetrators.
“We urge residents to remain calm and cooperate with security agencies as efforts intensify to stabilise the area,” he added.
Local sources said Kawara village was extensively burnt, along with parts of Tungar Bori and nearby settlements.
Authorities have yet to release an official casualty figure, but residents fear several people were killed or injured.
The latest attack underscores growing insecurity in border communities between Kebbi and Niger State, where recurring violence has forced many residents from their homes.
