Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has endorsed his deputy, Obafemi Hamzat, for the governorship race, following the latter’s formal declaration of interest in succeeding him, Prime Business Africa reports.
Hamzat disclosed the development on Monday, describing the governor’s backing as a significant vote of confidence in his leadership and years of public service.
“Today, I am honoured by the endorsement of my governor, my brother and my friend,” Hamzat said, noting that their long-standing working relationship in Lagos governance has shaped his commitment to service.

Confirming the development, Sanwo-Olu said he received Hamzat earlier in the day when the deputy governor formally communicated his intention to contest the state’s top job.
The governor highlighted their over two decades of collaboration, expressing confidence in Hamzat’s capacity to lead the state.
“We have worked closely for over 21 years and I know his strength, his capabilities and his steady commitment to the people of Lagos,” Sanwo-Olu said.
He further described Hamzat as well-grounded in governance and socio-economic development, attributing part of his experience to the political mentorship of President Bola Tinubu.

According to the governor, Lagos requires experienced leadership and continuity, stressing that the state is “too important to be left for experimenting.”
Sanwo-Olu expressed confidence that Hamzat would sustain and build on ongoing developmental strides if elected, citing his values and work ethic as key strengths.
The endorsement is expected to shape political alignments within the state as preparations gradually build toward the next governorship election.
