Nigerian music sensation, Divine Ikubor, widely known as Rema, made history at the MTV Video Music Awards held in Newark, New Jersey, as he bagged the inaugural Best Afrobeats award.

The coveted accolade was bestowed upon Rema for his remarkable collaboration with international star Selena Gomez on the track ‘Calm Down.’

Rema’s ‘Calm Down’ faced stiff competition from other chart-toppers, including Burna Boy’s ‘It’s Plenty,’ Davido feat. Musa Key’s ‘Unavailable,’ Ayra Starr’s ‘Rush,’ Libianca’s ‘People,’ Wizkid feat. Ayrra Starr’s ‘2 Sugar,’ and Fireboy DML’s ‘Bandana.’

Rema’s win signifies his significant contribution to the Afrobeats genre’s global growth. In related news, Spotify unveiled a monumental achievement for Rema. His hit single, ‘Calm Down,’ has crossed the remarkable milestone of one billion streams on the platform, marking a historic moment for African music.

Victor Okpala, Spotify’s Artiste and Label Partnerships Manager for West Africa, expressed his admiration for Rema’s artistry and global appeal. According to Spotify’s ‘Journey to a Billion Streams’ project, Rema ranked among the top 10 most streamed Afrobeats artists on the platform.
