‘Peter Pan & Wendy’: First Watch Review

The timeless story of Peter Pan and Wendy has been retold many times, but the latest adaptation brings new life to the classic tale. Director David Lowery and co-writer Toby Halbrooks offer a fresh take on J. M. Barrie’s story, staying faithful to the original text while adding new layers and emotional depth.

The story begins with Wendy Darling (Ever Anderson) torn between her desire to remain a child and her impending adulthood. With the help of Peter Pan (Alexander Molony) and Tinker Bell (Yara Shahidi), Wendy and her brothers follow Peter to Neverland, a place where children never grow up.

But they soon find themselves pursued by Peter’s archenemy, the fearsome Captain Hook (Jude Law), and his crew.

Lowery and Halbrooks explore the relationship between Peter and Hook, delving deeper into their history and adding emotional complexity to both characters. Anderson’s performance as Wendy is a standout, balancing her desire to grow up with her love for play and adventure. Molony’s Peter is both promising and bratty, while Law’s Hook is a delightfully villainous character with unexpected depth.

Lowery’s direction adds a sense of playfulness and wonder to the film, with dialogue that hints at the story being a game played in a bedroom.

The director also balances the eternal youth of Neverland with the beauty of a life fully lived, reminding viewers that growing up is a natural part of life.

While Peter Pan & Wendy is not a complete reinvention of the story, it brings new life and depth to a classic tale. Lowery and Halbrooks demonstrate that sticking to the original text and adding layers to the characters can create a fresh and compelling adaptation.

With this film, Lowery has shown the correct way to tell a time-honored story once more, and offers a refreshing take on a beloved classic.
