Passengers Injured as Abuja–Kaduna Train Suffers Collision Near Asham

March 16, 2026

Several passengers were injured on Monday after an Abuja–Kaduna train operated by the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) was involved in an incident near Asham along the Abuja–Kaduna rail corridor, Prime Business Africa reports.

Managing Director of the corporation, Kayode Opeifa, confirmed the development, stating that the train encountered a technical issue that led to a collision within the train formation.

According to him, the incident occurred at about 10:30 a.m. near Asham station when a rear locomotive reportedly made contact with a passenger coach behind it due to a suspected coupling fault.

“It is confirmed that our Abuja–Kaduna train had an incident at Asham. Passengers were injured while an investigation is ongoing into the exact cause of the incident,” Opeifa said.

He noted that although several passengers sustained injuries during the impact, no fatalities were recorded as of the time the report was filed.

Following the incident, emergency response teams from the NRC were deployed to the scene to assist affected passengers. The injured were subsequently transported back to the Idu Train Station in Abuja, where they received medical attention, while some passengers were referred to nearby hospitals for further treatment.

Railway officials said the train later continued its journey after the affected locomotive and coach were attended to by technical teams, arriving at Idu station behind schedule.

The NRC added that an investigation has been launched to determine the precise cause of the incident and prevent a recurrence, noting that technical teams are working to establish whether the suspected coupling failure or another mechanical issue triggered the collision.

The Abuja–Kaduna rail line remains one of Nigeria’s busiest passenger rail corridors, connecting the Federal Capital Territory with Kaduna State and serving thousands of commuters daily.
