Nigeria and the United States have agreed to deepen security cooperation, focusing on the protection of vulnerable communities, prosecution of terrorism suspects, disruption of terrorist financing and the resettlement of internally displaced persons, the U.S. Department of State said, Prime Business Africa reports.
The agreement followed the second session of the U.S.-Nigeria Joint Working Group, hosted in Washington on Aug. 12 by U.S. Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs Allison Hooker. Nigeria’s delegation was led by National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu.

The meeting built on the group’s inaugural session in Abuja on Jan. 22, which focused on strengthening cooperation on counterterrorism, intelligence sharing and the protection of communities at risk of religiously motivated violence.
The latest talks centred on three priorities: protecting Christian communities in Nigeria’s Middle Belt, strengthening judicial and security institutions to hold perpetrators of violence accountable, and expanding military-to-military cooperation.
The two sides also reviewed Nigeria’s efforts to resettle internally displaced persons in their ancestral communities, prosecute terrorism cases and combat the financing of terrorist organisations.
The United States acknowledged Nigeria’s reported progress, including the prosecution of hundreds of Boko Haram and Islamic State-West Africa (ISIS-WA) suspects, expansion of judicial capacity, and recruitment and training of 50,000 additional police officers.
Despite those efforts, the Joint Working Group identified continuing challenges, including reports of civilian fatalities and gaps in transparency over humanitarian expenditure.
Both sides acknowledged that more work was needed, particularly in supporting internally displaced persons and facilitating their safe and sustainable return to their communities.
The discussions also covered continued cooperation to counter terrorist financing, biometric information sharing to support accountability measures, and law enforcement capacity building through the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs and Bureau of Counterterrorism.
Military-to-military discussions continued at the Pentagon on Aug. 13, as the two countries examined broader defence and security cooperation.

The engagement also covered intelligence gathering and coordination, stronger border controls to curb the movement of illicit goods, resources and people, and a strategic review of the bilateral defence roadmap.
Hooker separately met with Ribadu to advance bilateral priorities and reaffirm the United States’ commitment to working with Nigeria to protect Christian communities and strengthen security cooperation.
The latest talks underscore efforts by Abuja and Washington to broaden their security partnership beyond counterterrorism operations to include intelligence sharing, terrorist-financing controls, law enforcement, civilian protection, border security and the resettlement of displaced communities.
