Nationwide Protests Forces Engineers To Shift Meeting To September

The Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria (COREN), has rescheduled the date for its 32nd Engineering Assembly meeting due to the ongoing #EndBadGovernanceInNigeria protests.

According to a statement signed by COREN Registrar, Engr. Prof Adisa Bello, the meeting earlier scheduled to take place from 5th to 7th of August, has been shifted to Monday 2nd to Wednesday 4th September 2024.

According to the COREN Registrar, the rescheduling of the meeting was as a result of the nationwide protests rocking the country.

The statement reads: “The Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria, (COREN), has reviewed the current situation in the country and to forestall unforeseen circumstances in relation to the safety and security of all participants, the 32nd Engineering Assembly earlier slated to hold from the 5th to 7th of August 2024 has been shifted to Monday 2nd to Wednesday 4th September 2024.”

It said rescheduling of the meeting is as a result of the current situation in the country and the need to avert any undesired outcome in terms of safety of participants in the meeting.

Prime Business Africa reports that some Nigerians have embarked on a 10-day nationwide protest against rising cost of living and economic hardships in the country.

The protests, which started on Thursday, 1st August, is expected to last till 10th August according to the organisers.

The exercise has turned violent in about 17 states, with the death toll said to have reached 21,  175 people injured and over 1,000 arrested by law enforcement agents. Curfew has been declared in states like Kano, Borno,  and Yobe, where extreme violence, and looting have been recorded.
