Former Kano State governor, Rabiu Kwankwaso, has dismissed reports suggesting he has taken a definitive position on his political future within the African Democratic Congress, stating that consultations are still ongoing amid internal challenges facing the party, Prime Business Africa reports.
In a statement issued on Saturday, Kwankwaso said narratives about a possible realignment or his alignment with any presidential ambition within the ADC were “misleading,” stressing that no final decision had been reached by him or his political associates.
“We have noted recent media reports and discussions suggesting a possible realignment within the ADC due to the current challenges facing the party,” he said.

Kwankwaso pointed to a series of legal and institutional setbacks affecting the party, including a recent ruling by the Supreme Court, which affirmed the legitimacy of a factional National Working Committee led by former Senate President David Mark but returned the matter to a lower court for further proceedings.
He added that a Federal High Court had also ruled against the party’s recent convention, further complicating its internal structure.
The former minister of defence also disclosed that the Attorney General of the Federation, Lateef Fagbemi, had approached a Federal High Court seeking the deregistration of the ADC, a move he described as unusual.
“We left the NNPP due to externally influenced legal problems that made our stay perilous. The ADC has now also been forced into this difficulty,” he said.

Kwankwaso said he and other stakeholders had begun “wide-ranging consultations” with leaders across political platforms, including the National Democratic Coalition and the Peoples Redemption Party, to determine the best course of action.
On the issue of the 2027 presidency, the former governor said he had neither declared an intention to run nor endorsed any aspirant, noting that the ADC had yet to zone its presidential ticket.
“The ADC is yet to zone its presidential ticket or take any decision on a candidate. I have therefore neither declared any intention to run for president nor endorsed any aspirant. All speculations to the contrary are premature and unfounded,” he said.
Kwankwaso also explained his absence from two recent ADC stakeholders’ meetings, attributing it to personal commitments, which he said were duly communicated to party leadership.
Reaffirming his political stance, he highlighted his past record of party loyalty, including supporting former President Muhammadu Buhari after the 2014 All Progressives Congress (APC) presidential primary and backing Atiku Abubakar after the 2019 Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) primary.
“I have always placed national interest and party unity above personal ambition,” he said.
He assured that any final decision on his political direction would be formally communicated at the appropriate time.
The development comes amid heightened political manoeuvring and coalition talks among opposition figures ahead of the 2027 general elections, with uncertainty continuing to trail the future of emerging alliances.
