Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi and Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. have agreed to elevate bilateral ties to a “Comprehensive Strategic Partnership” following a summit meeting held at the Akasaka Palace Guest House in Tokyo.
Takaichi disclosed this after hosting Marcos, who is on a state visit to Japan, saying the move reflects the “remarkable progress” in cooperation between both countries in recent years.

According to the Japanese prime minister, the two leaders also agreed to begin formal negotiations on a “Mutual Defense Information Sharing Agreement” and commence studies toward upgrading the existing economic partnership agreement between both nations.
The leaders further confirmed cooperation under the “Power Asia” initiative and discussed issues ranging from maritime affairs and economic security to artificial intelligence, digital technology and development cooperation.
Takaichi said both countries exchanged views on regional and global developments and reaffirmed their commitment to advancing cooperation aimed at promoting peace and stability in the Indo-Pacific region.
She described the Philippines as an “extremely important partner” in advancing the “Free and Open Indo-Pacific” vision, adding that Japan would continue strengthening ties with like-minded countries regardless of changes in the international environment.

The Japanese leader noted that the Philippines would become Japan’s first “Comprehensive Strategic Partner,” describing the development as a significant milestone in bilateral relations.
She also highlighted the growing personal relationship between both leaders, noting that Marcos was the first foreign leader she had met physically since assuming office as prime minister last autumn. The two leaders had earlier held a telephone summit in March.
During a state dinner held after the talks, Japan arranged performances of some of Marcos’ favourite songs, while Japanese egg sandwiches said to be one of the Philippine president’s favourite Japanese foods were included in the menu.
This year marks the 70th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Japan and the Philippines under the theme, “Weaving the Future Together: Peace, Prosperity, Possibilities.”
Takaichi said the state visit would further strengthen cooperation and mutual trust between the two Asian neighbours.
