Indefinite Strike Hits Federal Health Sector Starting Tonight

November 14, 2025

Federal health facilities across Nigeria are set to be grounded as the Joint Health Sector Unions (JOHESU) directs its members to commence an indefinite nationwide strike from midnight of Friday, November 14, 2025, over a 12-year unresolved demand for adjustment of the Consolidated Health Salary Structure (CONHESS).

At a press briefing in Abuja on Friday, JOHESU National Chairman Ado Kabiru also instructed workers in state health institutions to be on standby for a 15-day strike notice, signaling potential disruption beyond federal facilities.

Kabiru dismissed claims by the Federal Government that it had engaged the unions within the last 48 hours to avert the industrial action, insisting the government’s responses were insufficient.

The strike is expected to affect services across laboratories, medical records, administration, accounts, mortuaries, pharmacies, and other critical departments, raising concerns about the impact on patient care in federal tertiary hospitals.

In a letter circulated to state chairmen and secretaries, JOHESU emphasized that the industrial action was necessitated by the government’s “apparent unseriousness and lack of commitment” to the union’s lawful demands, particularly regarding CONHESS salary adjustments.

The union has also activated a situation room at its national secretariat to monitor compliance and manage emergency situations arising from the strike.

JOHESU’s affiliates have been instructed to ensure total compliance with the directive, with photographic and documented evidence of the strike action to be forwarded to the National Secretariat.

The development marks another escalation in the ongoing dispute between the federal government and health sector workers, raising concerns over access to essential health services in the coming days.
