Fire Guts FMBN Headquarters In Abuja, Sensitive Documents Destroyed

FMBN acknowledges incident, says investigation ongoing as extent of damage is assessed
August 2, 2026

The headquarters of the Federal Mortgage Bank of Nigeria, FMBN, in Abuja was gutted by fire late Saturday night, destroying sensitive documents in the boardroom.

According to multiple sources at the bank, the fire started at minutes before 8pm in the office of the Special Adviser to the Managing Director and spread to the boardroom. Personnel of the Federal Fire Service arrived and brought it under control about two hours later, around 10pm.

A senior official who spoke on condition of anonymity said sensitive documents kept in the boardroom were burnt before the fire was put out.

FMBN Acknowledges Fire, Launches Investigation

In a statement posted on Instagram, FMBN’s Head of Corporate Communications, Mr Joe Abuku, acknowledged the Saturday night fire.

He said investigations were ongoing to ascertain the cause of the incident, after which a more comprehensive statement would be issued by the bank.

Abuku also thanked the Federal Fire Service and other security agencies that assisted in putting out the fire.

As of press time Sunday, the bank had not released details on the full extent of damage or whether operations at the headquarters would be affected in the coming week.

Incident Comes Amid Housing Finance Push

The fire comes at a time FMBN is scaling operations under the Renewed Hope Housing Programme. The bank recently announced an operational surplus of ₦11.5 billion — its first in over 30 years — and is managing a ₦100 billion off-taker guarantee for affordable housing projects nationwide.

Last weekend, July 25-26, 2026, the Federal Government directed FMBN to raise its mortgage loan ceiling to ₦85 million. The directive was given by the Minister of Housing and Urban Development, Dr. Muttaqha Rabe Darma, at the BusinessDay Real Estate Conference 2026 in Abuja.

According to the minister, the new ceiling is expected to enable FMBN to approve at least 2,000 mortgages annually and allow National Housing Fund contributors to access up to 25% of their retirement savings as equity for home ownership.

FMBN Managing Director, Shehu Usman Osidi, had earlier this year commended the Federal Fire Service for its response during a previous incident at the bank’s premises, as both institutions moved to establish fire posts in FMBN-funded housing estates nationwide.

Pattern Of Fire Outbreaks In Federal Institutions

The FMBN incident adds to a pattern of fire outbreaks at federal institutions in Abuja in recent years. Fires have previously affected the FIRS headquarters, parts of INEC, the Office of the Accountant General, and the Corporate Affairs Commission, CAC.

Stakeholders have repeatedly called for improved fire safety protocols and the digitization of public records to prevent loss of critical documents.

What This Means For Housing Finance

With Nigeria’s housing deficit estimated at 15 million units as of 2025, any disruption to FMBN’s records could slow mortgage approvals, NHF disbursements, and the delivery of Renewed Hope housing projects.

The immediate task for the bank will be to audit what was lost, secure remaining records, and assure partners and NHF contributors that lending operations will not be derailed.

When public institutions burn, it is not just paper that turns to ash. It is public trust, audit trails, and the timelines of Nigerians waiting for a home.

Prime Business Africa will continue to monitor developments at FMBN and report updates.
