EPL: Man City Beats Sloppy Tottenham Hotspur, Closes Gap On Arsenal

January 19, 2023

Defending English Premier League champions, Manchester City came from two goals down to cut Arsenal’s lead at the top of the Premier League to five points with a 4-2 win against Tottenham on Thursday night.

City was losing 2-0 at halftime with their fans booing them at the break but the atmosphere changed significantly in the second half when the City started getting back into the game.

Julian Alvarez, Erling Haaland, and Riyad Mahrez with double scored three quickfire goals in 12 minutes to settle a thrilling contest at the Etihad Stadium.

City was controversially beaten 2-1 last weekend by city rivals United, and their title defence looked to have fallen apart but the second-half display shows that there is still a lot to come from the defending league champions.

Dejan Kulusevski and Emerson Royal put Spurs ahead in the first half – first Kulusevski – who finished beautifully before Emerson Royal headed home after Ederson pushed the ball to his path after a rasping shot by Harry Kane.

Mahrez had put the home team ahead in the 63rd minute and he killed off any chance of a late twist when breaking away to score again in the 90th with a right-footed finish at the near post.

City plays Wolverhampton on Sunday and can move to within two points of Arsenal before the Londoners host United at Emirates Stadium the same day.

Manchester City will face Arsenal twice in the second half of the Premier League this season and once in the FA Cup beginning with the February 15 meeting in the league.

City first won the title under the new Super rich management in 2012 and have become one of Europe’s top sides since that epic campaign when a last-gasp Sergio Aguero goal defeated Queens Park Rangers 3-2 to deny Manchester United a chance to win the title.
