The Department of State Services (DSS) has confirmed that the suspended governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (DSS), Mr Godwin Emefiele, is now in its custody.

The secret service made this known in a terse statement posted on its official Twitter handle on Saturday afternoon.

Some media platforms had earlier reported that Mr Emefiele had been arrested by the DSS, but the agency came out to refute it saying he was yet to appear.

However, in another tweet later in the day, the agency said he is now in their custody for “some investigative reasons.”

The statement signed by DSS Public Relations Officer, Peter Afunanya warned the media to apply utmost caution in reportage concerning the matter.

The statement reads:  “The Department of State Services (DSS) hereby confirms that Mr Godwin Emefiele, the suspended Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) is now in its custody for some investigative reasons.

“The public, particularly the Media, is enjoined to apply utmost caution in the reportage and narratives concerning this.”

Following his suspension on Friday, 9 June, Mr Emefiele was directed to immediately hand over the affairs of his office to the Deputy Governor (Operations Directorate), who will act as the CBN governor pending the conclusion of the investigation and the reforms.

A video circulating online showed the moment Mr Emefiele alighted from a white Hilux van and boarded a waiting aircraft that conveyed him to the DSS office. He was surrounded by DSS officials as he was climbing the stairs of the aircraft.
