Are Foreign Investors Losing Confidence In Access Holdings As They Significantly Reduce Stakes?

Foreign investors have reduced their investments in Access Holdings at a time the company’s share is plummeting and the lender is unable to pay dividends to shareholders for their investments.

Prime Business Africa’s (PBA) analysis showed that the investments the foreign investors held in Access Holdings dropped to 2.48 billion shares in 2025, from 7.44 billion shares held the previous year.

This indicates the foreign investors reduced their investments in Access Holdings by 4.96 billion shares between the first quarter and fourth quarter of 2025.

A breakdown of the shares held by the foreign investors showed that foreign institutional investors held 7.39 billion shares in 2024, however, by 2025, they reduced their exposure in Access Holdings to 2.47 billion shares.

Also, foreign retail investors reduced their investments in Access Holdings to 9.01 million shares last year, compared to the 57.33 million shares they held in the financial institution in 2024.

With the institutional investors reducing their exposure in Access Holdings by 4.91 billion, their stake in the lender dropped significantly to 4.64 percent in 2025, compared to 13.86 percent held in 2024.

Also, foreign retail investors reduced their stake in Access Holdings to 0.02 percent in 2025, from 0.11 percent the year before, after reducing their exposure by 48.32 million shares.

In monetary terms, foreign investors hold N52,16 billion investments in Access Holdings as of the end of last year, compared to the N0.23 billion held at the end of 2024, according to Prime Business Africa’s analysis.

Foreign investors reduced their exposure in Access Holdings at the time the company’s share price nosedived from N24.10 Kobo on January 2, 2025, to N21 by December 31, 2025. shareholders.

According to analysis, the N3.1 kobo decline in Access Holdings’ share price led to the company’s shareholders losing 14.76 percent of their investment value last year.

To compound a disappointing investing period for shareholders, Access Holdings did not pay dividends to shareholders for the 2025 period, failing to replicate the N74.64 billion paid as dividends in 2024.
