The National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Nentawe Yilwatda, has reportedly screened Imo State Governor, Hope Uzodinma, ahead of a possible bid for the Imo West Senatorial seat in the 2027 National Assembly election.
The development comes amid growing political realignments within the APC in Imo State as stakeholders in the Imo West (Orlu) zone intensify consultations ahead of the next general elections.
Although the APC national secretariat has yet to issue an official statement confirming the screening exercise, party insiders said the move signals increasing support within the ruling party for Uzodinma’s anticipated return to the Senate after completing his tenure as governor.

Political stakeholders in Orlu zone had earlier publicly endorsed Uzodinma for the Senate seat, with reports indicating that party leaders and supporters purchased nomination forms on his behalf as part of efforts to persuade him to contest.
Uzodinma previously represented Imo West Senatorial District in the Senate from 2011 to 2019 before emerging governor of Imo State in 2020.
If he eventually contests, wins the January 2027 National Assembly election and is sworn in as senator in June 2027, Uzodinma would be expected to resign from office as governor about six to seven months before the expiration of his second tenure in January 2028.
Under the provisions of the 1999 Constitution, his deputy governor would automatically assume office to complete the remainder of the administration’s tenure.

The potential Senate bid is already generating intense political discussions within Imo APC circles, with analysts suggesting that the move could significantly shape succession politics in the state ahead of the 2027 governorship transition.

Neither Governor Uzodinma nor the APC national leadership had officially commented on the reported screening as of the time of filing this report.
