Algeria has donated four military helicopters to Niger as the two countries strengthen defence and security cooperation amid persistent militant threats across the Sahel, Prime Business Africa reports.
The package comprises two Mi-24 attack helicopters and two Mi-171 transport helicopters, along with ammunition, spare parts, maintenance equipment and logistical support.

The Mi-24s are armed combat helicopters designed for close air support and ground-attack missions, while the Mi-171s provide airlift capabilities for transporting troops, equipment and supplies.
The delivery could bolster Niger’s ability to conduct aerial operations and move personnel and equipment across its vast territory, where its armed forces are battling jihadist groups and other armed factions.
The transfer also comes as Algeria seeks to strengthen its security engagement with countries in the Sahel, where instability and militant violence have posed growing challenges to regional governments.
Niger has undergone a major shift in its external security partnerships since the military coup in 2023. It has joined Mali and Burkina Faso in the Alliance of Sahel States, while the three countries have scaled back defence ties with several Western powers and expanded military cooperation with Russia.

The helicopter donation therefore comes amid a wider realignment of security partnerships in the region. However, Algeria’s assistance should not by itself be interpreted as evidence of a formal alignment with the Russia-backed Sahel alliance.
For Niger, the additional aircraft provide greater flexibility for troop transport, logistics and combat operations. For Algeria, the transfer reinforces its growing security engagement with a strategically important southern neighbour and underscores its efforts to play a larger role in addressing instability along its southern borders.
