Reece James Takes Over Chelsea Captaincy After Azpilicueta’s Departure

In the wake of Cesar Azpilicueta’s departure to Atletico Madrid this summer, Chelsea Football Club has chosen Reece James to step into the role of captain for the upcoming season.

With a mix of pride and enthusiasm, James shared, “Assuming this role and the associated responsibilities brings me immense joy. Recognizing the significant legacy of past captains at this club, “I know I’ve got big shoes to fill because we have had huge captains here in the past, but I am excited.”

James, who has been an integral part of the Chelsea family since the tender age of six, expressed his deep connection: “I have been at Chelsea pretty much my whole life. I started here when I was six and to come through the Academy is tough. But to go on and become captain, it’s a great feeling for me and my family.”

Mauricio Pochettino, the head coach, offered insights into the decision: “The choice to appoint Reece as captain was a collective one, endorsed by both myself and the club. We’re delighted to have Reece lead the team in the upcoming season.”

Pochettino praised James’ qualities, saying, “He leads by example and his attitude and dedication to Chelsea has been clear throughout pre-season. He proudly wore the armband during our summer tour and will take up the challenge of leading our squad with his own approach and ideas.”

James’ first official duty as captain will be leading the Blues onto the pitch for their season opener against Liverpool this Sunday.
