Organised Labour has commenced its protest nationwide as planned against harsh economic conditions caused by the removal of subsidy on petrol by the new government of President Bola Tinubu.

The protest has begun as workers, in their numbers, carrying placards gathered to protest on the streets in the Federal Capital Territory Abuja, Lagos, Ogun, Kano, and other parts of the country.

In Abuja at the Unity Fountain, Presidents of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), comrade Joe Ajero, Trade Union Congress, Festus Usifo were seen with other Nigerian workers marching in protest.

In his address at the Unity Fountain, Ajero said the protest is to display the dissatisfaction of Nigerian workers about harsh economic realities posed by government policies.

“Protests have taken off in all states bearing some hindrances in some places. We are aware of the Police efforts to stop the process in some areas,” Ajero said.

“To be candid with you, nothing is stopping the protest. Based on responses from state governments, it is equally our determination whether the protest will be for today, tomorrow or next, not by using force to stop the people from expressing their views. We are here for the protest, to make a statement to Nigerians,” he added.

Recall that workers had announced a nationwide protest on August 2 to demand a reversal of fuel price increments and other policies by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s government.

In Lagos, protesters converged on the Ikeja under-bridge

In Kano, one of the banners carried by protesters reads: “Let poor Nigerians breathe.”
