Crocodiles Electrocuted In Ooni's Resort Fire

An unspecified number of crocodiles are said to have been electrocuted during the fire incident that razed part of the Grand Resort in Osun State on Monday.

The Grand Resort is a recreation facility said to belong to the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi. No life was lost to the fire.

However, it was learnt that a number of crocodiles were electrocuted as an electric cable fell into the lake where they were housed in the resort.

The cause of the fire is yet to be ascertained.

The spokesman of the Osun State Fire Service, Ibrahim Adekunle, who said firemen received a distress call from the resort at about 6:52 pm on Monday, said that the fire was eventually put to check some hours after.

“We received a distress call from the resort around 6:52 pm and firemen immediately proceeded to the scene.

“The men left the area and informed me that the fire had been put off at about 9:17 pm. No loss of life,” Adekunle said.

Giving an update on Tuesday, Adekunle said, “At exactly 18:53Hrs Monday, 24th July 2023, we were alerted by one Mr Samuel, one of the staff of Ife Resort about a fire outbreak around their crocodile sanctuary.

“The men of Ile-Ife zonal Fire HQ of Osun State Fire Service moved to the scene in the company of the Fire Department of Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife.

“The fire was however put out and other adjoining structures were protected with the joint efforts of the two services. Few crocodiles were however electrocuted, while others were saved.”
