‘Super Mario Bros. Movie’ Exceeds $700 Million On Second Weekend

In its second weekend of release, “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” exceeded expectations, raking in an impressive $92 million domestically, surpassing Sunday’s estimate of $87 million.

This makes it the highest-grossing second weekend for any animated film and the seventh-highest for any film in the domestic box office.

The film’s success can be attributed to its appeal to family audiences and nostalgic fans, which resulted in a decline of only 37% in ticket sales from its $146 million opening weekend, amassing a total of $353 million so far.

What makes this feat even more remarkable is that typically, big-budget blockbusters experience a 50% or greater decline in sales after a massive opening weekend, but “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” proved to be an exception.

In just 13 days, the movie crossed the $700 million mark globally, becoming one of only twelve Hollywood releases to achieve this since the pandemic.

It is currently the second-highest grossing animated film of the pandemic, following “Minions: The Rise of Gru” with $942.5 million, but is expected to surpass this and be the first 2023 movie to hit $1 billion worldwide.

Not only is “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” the highest-grossing film of the year at the global and domestic box office, it also broke the record for the biggest video game adaptation in history, overtaking the totals of 2016’s “Warcraft” and “Pokémon: Detective Pikachu.”

In its second weekend, the film earned an additional $102 million in the international box office, bringing its overseas total to $339 million. Key markets include Mexico with $53.4 million, the U.K. and Ireland with $44.3 million, and Germany with $29 million.
