Vice Chancellor of the University of Nigeria Nsukka (UNN), Prof Charles Arizechukwu Igwe, has urged newly admitted students to avoid examination malpractices, sorting for grades, cultism, drug abuse and other social vices in the University.

Join our WhatsApp ChannelThe Vice Chancellor, who spoke at the 48th matriculation ceremony of the University on Saturday, 18th February, 2023, charged the fresh students admitted into various disciplines for the 2021/2022 academic session, to abide by the school rules and regulations and be of good behaviour.
While congratulating the students on their successful entry into the University, Prof Igwe stressed that UNN considers merit and equity above all things and charged the new students to focus on their studies, work harder and avoid anything that would distract them academically.
He noted that UNN awards certificates only to those that have been found worthy in character and in learning.
““I am delighted to address you all on this very occasion of your matriculation. On behalf of the governing council, management and senate of the University of Nigeria, I congratulate all our freshmen for meeting the requirements for the admission into the University of Nigeria.
“As you know, the competition for spaces in the University of Nigeria is always keen. Thus you should all be very proud of your performances in the University Matriculation Examinations (UME) and the Post-UME test, which have enabled you to become proud students of the University of Nigeria. I am therefore very happy to welcome you to the University of Nigeria and to formally admit you into the family of Lions and Lionesses.“
“The University of Nigeria takes pride in being Nigeria’s First indigenous university, which was established in the wake of Nigeria’s independence in 1960. Over the years, the university has earned the reputation of an institution that seeks to maintain the highest standards in teaching, learning and research.
“This has been achieved due to the diligence and hard work of our staffs and students. In addition, the university places merit and equity above all considerations. Your admission may signify the realization of a dream, the dream of earning the honours degree of the University of Nigeria. To realize this new dream, you have to work harder than you did to get admitted in the first place. You must give priority to your studies while other interests can follow.
“May I inform you that the degrees, diplomas and certificates of the university are awarded to those who have been found worthy in character and in learning.
“This is because the university of Nigeria also places a very high premium on character and humanity, because we seek to produce law –abiding and decent citizens who will become responsible citizens and good ambassadors of the university.”
The Vice Chancellor warned that students caught violating the school regulations will be made to face punishment ranging from disciplinary actions through law enforcement agents, suspension, to outright expulsion depending on the gravity of offence.
“You are expected to abide by the rules, regulations and laws of the university and the society; this is because the violation of any of the rules could result in the suspension, outright expulsion from the university and prosecution. Therefore, any student caught indulging in secret cult activities, would be expelled and handed over to police for prosecution,” Prof Igwe stated.
The Vice Chancellor further advised the students to desist from gambling, drug abuse, and other activities that could endanger their future prospects.
He also stated that his administration will continue to implement policies that will support and protect students from exploitation, harassment and other forms of abuses in the hands of staffs and fellow students.
He wished the new students a memorable and successful study in UNN.
