This was revealed in a statement on Tuesday signed by the NUPRC Chief Executive, Gbenga Komolafe, who stated that the shortlisted companies would move to the next stage of the gas flaring commercialisation programme.

Komolafe said that out of the 300 firms that applied for the programme, 139 had been shortlisted to proceed to the next stage of the programme.

The Nigeria Gas Flaring Commercialisation Program (NGFCP) was introduced to provide a market solution to flared gas in oil fields. The programme which was conceived in 2016, was relaunched in 2022,  to drive the attainment of zero routine gas flaring by 2035 and net zero emissions by 2060 in the country in line with President Buhari’s declaration at COP 26.

According to a report by Dataphyte, 21 oil fields flared 6.63 billion cubic metres (bcm) of gas in 2021, which actually a reduction compared to previous years.

Gas commercialisation is aimed at cutting 15 million tonnes of carbon emissions from the atmosphere.

Komolafe, however, did not mention the names of the successful firms and when the next stage of the programme would take place.
