The Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Godwin Emefiele, has been summoned by Justice Inyang Ekwo of the Federal High Court, Abuja, on Thursday, over a judgment debt case.

Emefiele had been ordered to pay a Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Joe Agi, judgment debt of $70 million, but it was disclosed that the central bank governor is yet to adhere to the court ruling.

As a result, Justice Ekwo said Emefiele should appear in court on January 18, 2023, to answer question relating to the case. It was gathered that the judgement sum was from legal services which  Agi offered to 774 Local government areas and some states.

Emefiele had reportedly refused to make the payment to the Senior Advocate of Nigeria, leading to Agi approaching the Federal High Court to force the debt judgement.

The CBN governor, through his counsel, Damian Dodo (SAN), asked the court to set aside the judgement of $70 million to Agi, considering that an appeal has been filed by the central bank.

However, Agi’s attorney, Joseph Njikonye (SAN), said the motion by Emefiele’s counsel should be disregarded as the debt judgement has not been carried out.

Emefiele is now expected to appear before Justice Ekwo of the Federal High Court in the first month of next year.
